The silence and peace in the remote area is important for Kitamura
Bakotsu. He is fully dedicated to his work. 10 years ago, he used
to live in the midst of the bustling quarters of Tokyo, among the
25 or so million people living in its centre and suburbs. Tokyo is
an inspiring place, no doubt. It governs the Eastern hemisphere and
beyond that by its avangarde design and fashion, while still maintaining
the link to the profound and splendid Japanese traditional art. The
contrast between old and new, the synthesis of traditional crafts
and modern expression had strong influence on the development of Kitamura
Bakotsu's calligraphic art.
:::: Scenes from Life in Japan
Get a feeling for the contrasts of Japanese society and life by hoovering
over the above pictures. Although such contrast also exists in Western
societies, it is never as obvious, as soncentrated and as close together.
Also, the lines of old and new, of tradition and avantgarde are never
as blurred and vage as in Japan.
